Originally from Bari on the South East coast of Italy, Nicola moved to Manchester in November 1999.
He followed in the family tradition by training to become an hairdresser – he worked in the family salon from the age of 10 with his father.
Before his move to the UK, Nicola worked for a number of companies, big and small, all across Italy. His bug for travel and adventure eventually brought him to England. Nicola found a job at Nino Milano almost immediately and worked there for the previous owners until he took over the running of the salon himself in 2006.
Nicola enjoys cutting hair and looking after his customers but his favourite part of the job is training and advising his staff and colleagues, particularly about colours techniques.
As Nicola’s brother, Francesco has also followed in the Vurchio family footsteps by becoming an hairdresser.
Like Nicola, Francesco learned his craft at the family salon in Italy. After finishing school at 18 he came to England and got a job with the previous owners of what is now Nino Milano Studio, who were also Italian.
Francesco has built up a regular client base who return to him time and time again. He believes trust is a big part of what he does as a hairdressers and knows people need to feel as though their hair is in safe hands. Qualified to NVQ Level 3, Francesco is proactive in his work and attends regular day courses to keep up with the latest trends.
Francesco enjoys meeting new people and visiting new places. During his time in the UK, Francesco has managed to travelled a little bit and see different parts of the country. He’s also a big football fan and when asked whose hair he would most like to cut, he admits it would have to be the first team of Italian club Juventus before a big game.
Maria hails from Galicia in the North West of Spain.
Maria moved to Manchester with her family when she was 12. She wanted to be a hairdresser from a young age and has been one ever since she left school. She was trained at Nino Milano and has worked here for 25 years – she worked for the previous owner along with Nicola and Francesco and stayed when Nic took over.
Maria has good, faithful customers who she has built up a trust with over the years. Her professional skills lie in cuts and colours, she is not a stylist and doesn’t do hair up. She keeps herself up-to-date with the latest hair styles and trends by attending reguals hair shows with the rest of the team and reading trade publications and articles.
Despite Nino Milano having a student-heavy clientele, Maria tends to look after the more professional customers. She even has some of the same clients she had when she was 17 and some of her regulars travel from Hale and Bowen to be in Maria’s capable and safe hands. She prefers working with shorter hair and particularly enjoys colouring. Her own hair included, Maria likes warm autumn hues, subtle reds and caramel blondes.
Outside of the salon Maria enjoys reading, walking and spending time in her home town of Heaton Mersey in Stockport. She also likes dining out, especially checking out Spanish and tapas restaurants, and holidays. She visits her family in Spain with regular trips back home throughout the year.
Stylist Taban cuts, colours and highlights as well as doing ‘hair-up’ for weddings and other occasions.
Taban is from Kurdistan but has lived in the UK with her family for 7 years. Manchester’s weather is a bit of bugbear for Taban, but other than that she loves the city!
Taban has worked at Nino Milano since October 2011. She is currently undertaking a professional barbering course to gain an official qualification in the industry. The course is also helping her improve her English.
Outside of the studio, Taban has two children, Maleen who is 5 and Helen who is 3. She enjoys spending time with her many friends and with her in-laws who help a lot with her childcare.
She also likes to travel, a lot. Taban goes home to Kurdistan for 5 weeks every year, sometimes twice a year if she can. She has 2 sisters who live in Sweden who she visits every year too. This year Taban is going to China for 10 days to visit her husband who is there as part of his studies. The trip will help towards her aim of visiting a different country each year. America and Thailand rank amongst her favourite places that she has visited so far.
She loves Shakira and Jennifer Lopez’s hair and would love to style their hair one day if she could.
Hajaz has worked at Nino Milano for five years. This is her first hairdressing job after training at Manchester college.
Although she enjoys her job, hairdressing is not the career path Hazja had orgininally planned. Whilst working part time at Nino Milano, she is also studying for another qualification in interior design, an area she has always been interested in. Both her studies and her role at the salon allow her to be creative, particularly when doing ‘hair-up’.
Styling and wedding hair are Hazja’s specialist areas, as well highlights. She likes to be as creative as she can and is constantly looking in magazines and the internet for inspiration and the lastest styles.
Originally from Northern Iraq, Hazja is Kurdish. Before moving to Manchester seven years ago, she lived in Holland for a while. As a result of having lived in many different countries, Hazja is fluent in Kurdish, Dutch and English!
As well as enjoying living in a big city like Manchester, Hazja likes to go home and visit her family twice a year. She is married and has a four year old daughter, Yara.
